Description
Market crosses are an interesting British tradition that, to my knowledge, doesn't exist in continental Europe. They marked the settlements that were granted the right to hold a regular market - mostly market towns, but sometimes cities, as is the case with Salisbury. They took a wide variety of shapes - some were actual crosses, but many were obelisks or elaborate gazebo-like structures. Most of them were made from stone and elaborately carved, but there are wooden examples as well.
