Winchester Guildhall

Winchester, the county town of Hampshire, is one of the most historically important cities in England. It started its life as an ancient Celtic settlement and was later turned by the Romans into a proper city, Venta Belgarum. The settlement didn't suffer very much from their withdrawal, as it was soon occupied by the invading West Saxons, who gave it it present name. Winchester flourished under the Saxon rule and became the capital of their state of Wessex - one of the largest and the most important of all the Saxon states. As expected from a city with such a rich history, Winchester has a lot of attractive and well-preserved historical architecture that is absolutely worth seeing.
